The good news is that Jesus is not the destroyer. Jesus is the savior! He has come to save you from that which will steal your purpose, kill your hope, and destroy any attempts at a good life. The shape of faith is made up of four sides: belief (what we do with our minds), confidence (what we do with our hearts, trust (what we do with our bodies), and allegiance (what we do with our will). The Lord has told you what is good, and this is what the Lord requires of you: to do what is justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. - Micah 6:8 Spiritual transformation is the work of the Holy Spirit to transform us into the image of Jesus for the joy of God the Father. The Spirit does this work in the context of Christian community as we walk along spiritual pathways. We want to be the kind of people who welcome the Holy Spirit on a regular basis. As Christians we remain open to receive the Holy Spirit primarily for two things: transformation and empowerment. Thomas believed in Jesus. He never doubted. He believed in Jesus' resurrection. He just needed a little more information than the other disciples. Thomas has much to teach us about believing in Jesus. In this story Jesus reveals the heart of God our Father and we have the opportunity to ask ourselves, “Who do I identify with? The younger son or the older son?” Our souls wait for the Lord because there are no quick and easy paths on the road to spiritual formation. Waiting is inevitable. Waiting is baked into this ancient Christian faith we have received. During a meal with two disciples in Emmaus, bread became a revelation of Jesus in their midst. And we are like bread. Jesus takes us, blesses us, breaks us, and gives us to the world making our lives extraordinary. God is with us like a neighbor, because Jesus is the Word made flesh and blood who moved into the neighborhood. God is with us in life, death, and new life. We believe in one God, one divine essence and substance in three persons. The doctrine of the Trinity is important and essential because it tells us who God is and subsequently who we are. Prayer is to our soul what breathing is to our body. Prayer is about carving out time and space to attend to the presence of God which is often found in stillness and silence. The Jesus Prayer helps us get there. The good news is that Jesus is not the destroyer. Jesus is the savior!
